Gaetano Ponti - trying to find

My great-grandfather supposedly served in the Spanish AMerican War. Can't find him in the Spanish-AMerican War Centinial site. He enlisted in INdiana (or possibly PA) and served primarily in Louisiana. I believe at Jackson Barracks and Fort St. Phillip. He died in LA in 12/15/1940. I think he served in the Army. ANy further details would be appreciated
