The Coast Artillery Corps was not formed until 1901 (see the chronology leading to its formation at http://www.spanamwar.com/coastartillery.htm ) The Spanish American War ended in 1898.

That said, in government records, all vets of the Spanish American War, Philippine American War and Boxer Rebellion are listed as "Spanish American War" veterans.

If this egnt enlisted in 1897, he would have had to have served in one of the regular army regiments. The state regiments and U.S. Volunteer regiments did not form until 1898.
