My wife is a direct descendant of Matthias Spedding, a sea captain in the early 1800's out of Whitehaven, Cumberland, England. He hauled coal to Dublin, Ireland in his brig. His father was apparently Jno. (Jonathan?) Spedding, b. 1790 in Cumberland County. His son was Mathias Spedding, also a sea captain, who immigrated to California about 1855. His son, Joseph Mathias Spedding was also a sea captain!

In any event, much of what we discovered about the Spedding family came from and other websites specializing in Cumberland, Whitehaven, and England history. We even got a street map to identify 13 George St. in Whitehaven where Mathias Spedding lived! There are also several local genealogical organizations associated with this and located in Cumbria (formerly Cumberland) County, England. Whitehaven is today a thriving tourist attraction.

Good luck on your research!
