I descend from Michael Speegle and Mary Ann Dolly Lowrimore. Michael was a son of Johanne Martin Speegle Jr and Ann Mary Lentz.
I have the person in your query as 'James' Henry Speegle, b. 1860, Winston County, Alabama, d. 30 Dec 1930. James Henry Speegle was the son of Daniel Martin Speegle, b. Dec 30 1833, d. 1863, and his wife Mary ?. Mary died of typhoid fever in April 1860 and is probably buried in Brushy Creek Cemetery, Cullman County, Alabama. Daniel Martin Speegle was the son of David Speegle and Winifred Cranford, David was the son of Daniel Jacob Speegle, brother to the Johanne Martin Speegle listed above as my ancestor.
The circumstances of Daniel Martin Speegle's (James Henry Speegle's father) death are not conclusively proven. Here are the two circumstances which may apply; Daniel Martin Speegle was old enough to be in the primary callup of volunteers for Confederate service in 1862 along with his brother John Cranford Speegle. It is known that John Cranford Speegle served in the 42nd Alabama Infantry and died in a Confederate Hospital near Jefferson, Mississippi in March 1863. I initially thought Daniel Martin Speegle also served in the same unit. He was present at the Talladega Camp of Instruction at the same time as John Cranford Speegle (December 1862). So there is the possibility he served in the 42nd Alabama. A descendant of Daniel Speegle B. 1777, Mellie Reyer Broadway, states that family tradition has him dying near Jackson, Mississippi in March or April 1863. However, there is a Corporal D.M. Spegle/Spigh/Speigh listed in the Compiled Records of the 3rd Alabama Cavalry. This D.M. Spegle is listed under the records of David Spiva, the records indicate he was captured during the Battle of Shelbyville, Tennessee on June 27, 1863. He was then sent to Louisville, Kentucky then to Camp Chase, Ohio and finally to Fort Delaware, Delaware where this D.M. Spigh died in August 1863. In any case Daniel Martin Speegle did not survive the war. I feel certain that his children were reared by their aunts or uncles.
James Henry Speegle was married twice, first to Martha Anderson, b. 5 Mar 1858, d. 8 Sep 1904, buried Littleville Cem, Walker County, Alabama; secondly to Jane Vines, b. 1890, d. 19 Aug 1968, buried New Canan Cem, Empire, Walker County, Alabama. James Henry Speegle's brother was John David Speegle, b. 31 Mar 1857, d. 23 Jan 1929, buried Townley City Cem, Walker County, Alabama, married Frances Palentine Romine.
I have been researching the Speegle Family for several years and I am especially interested in the Civil War service of the Speegle Families of Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky and North Carolina. I would be more than happy to share information I have.
