MRS. JOHN (ELLA SPEICHER) SHAWL
FEBRUARY 7, 1913
The many friends of the family were greatly shocked to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. John Shawl, of Onarga, which occurred on Monday (Feb. 3) evening at about 6:20 o'clock, of paralysis, at the home of her husband, Dr. John Shawl, in Onarga. Mrs. Shawl had apparently been in her usual health during the day, having busied herself about her housework, and had never been afflicted with paralysis previously.
Ella Speicher was born in Chatsworth on April 1, 1869, and was a daughter of Louis Speicher, now deceased, for years a resident of Chatsworth. She was united in marriage with John Shawl in this city about 25 years ago, one son being born to the union, Frank Shawl, now a practicing attorney of Gibson City. Previous to her marriage she was for several years employed in the Chatsworth Art Gallery, then under the ownership of A.H. Hall. She was a lady held in high esteem by all, and her relatives have the deepest sympathy of their friends in their sorrow.
In addition to her husband and son, Mrs. Shawl is survived by her stepmother, Mrs. Sarah Speicher, of this city, two sisters, Jennie, wife of Harry Tomes, of St. Louis, Phoebe, wife of R.L. Van Alstyne, of Cullom, one brother, Frank, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the following half-brothers and half-sisters; Lottie, wife of Charles Kirk, of Streator, Robert of Chatsworth, Ollie, wife of Cline Bowlin, of Gilman, Russell, of Gilman.
The funeral services which were held on Thursday afternoon, at two o'clock at Onarga, were attended by the following from here: Mrs. Mary Sorg, Mrs. Sarah Spiecher, Mrs. F.R. Beckman, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spiecher and James Van Alstyne.
