Speights and Dukes, Gates, Chowan, Nansemond
Our Speight families seem to be descended from old Captain Francis Speight b. 1614 England, who arrived in Nansemond County, Virginia about 1635.
My wife's uncle's name is Arthur DUKE Speight. I noticed that there was a great deal of involvement between the Duke and Speight families in Nansemond, Chowan, and Gates counties. Of particular interest is one Henry Speight, a Baptist preacher who performed several weddings in Gates and Chowan Counties. Was this man a younger Henry Speight than the one who witnessed the will of William Gatling (along with Anne Speight, and Joseph Speight) in Gates County about 1792?
We have my wife's lineage only back to a William Henry Speight born about 1822 who married Margaret Wallace in Perquimans County, N.C. in 1844. Could this William Henry Speight be a son of the Henry Speight who married Eliza Ballard in Gates County, N.C. December 8, 1817?
Thanks,
Will Smith
