Cy, I've run into may dead ends on her but recently found the death certificate for William Franklin Morgan (AL, June 1930) that stated she was Matilda Spears.By the calculation on the Census (AL, Randolph, 1850) I have calculated her to be born about 1828 in GA.I don't have a date for her marriage to Timothy Morgan (b. NC c. 1825).Records show that by 1855 he had remarried to Lizzie Nichols, and that Lizzie raised William Franklin Morgan as her son and also bore 3 daughters to Timothy before he left to go to war, from which he did not return.I am presuming that Matilda died in that length of time, but this cannot be proven because most records in Randolph Co. were lost in a fire in the 1890s.Family legend says she was of Indian descent (I have heard both Creek and Cherokee). There is another Matilda Spears b. 1828 possibly in Heard or Carroll Co, GA (just across the line from Randolph Co., AL) who would be the same age and also close by geographically. Also enumerated 3 houses away from Timothy and Matilda on the 1850 are Messer/Mercer Spears and his wife, Elizabeth Dodd and family, and enumerated next to Timothy and Matilda are a William and Rachel Spears and family. So you can see my confusion.Does this tie into your records?
Thanks!Doug
