From current research of this line of Spell Family here is the info I have on wife's line.
Part 1
John Spell was brought to Charles City, Virginia in 1701 by Thomas Thrower and George Passmore.
In 1747 Thomas Spell and John Spell of Brunswick County, Virginia bought land on the Tar River in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
Thomas Spell sold his property to his brother John Spell in 1757.
John Spell's will was probated in November of 1784 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
Mary S Wingert of 1021 East South Avenue, Olney, Illinois 62450 has done research of the John Spell family of Edgecombe, North Carolina.
Have not, as of yet connected the Spell family of South Carolina into the Spell family in Edgecombe, North Carolina.
My John Spell arrived in British West Florida from the Carolinas with a wife and 3 small children. He requested land on Bayou Castin and Ponchatrain Lake. His sons made their homes on property that is now Mandeville( Ponchatrain Post), La. When the territory was claimed by Spain, all children had to be christened Catholic. The records are in the St Louis Church in New Orleans, La.
Records relating to the Spell, Sharp and Smith families after 1810 can be found in the St Tammany Parish Courthouse in Covington, La.
Everette Campbell of 1059 Park Meadow Dr., Beaumont, Tx. 77706-3978 has compiled the Decendants of Benejar Spell and Dorothea Foreman. Benejar was the Son of Sterling Spell from St Catherine's Creek near Natchez
Miss. Benejar moved to Old Vermillion in the Orleans Territory about 1812. That area is now near Lafayette and Indian Bayou, La.
Sanders Spell Married Ann Bardeman in 1816 in St Tammany Parish, la. he lived on part of the Goodbee tract near mandeville, la. He sold his land to Elizageth G Spell in 1818. no other records have been found of this couple.
Part 2
In 1745, John and Thomas Spell were listed as early settlers from Brunswick County, Virginia to Edgecomb County, North Carolina. The settled on the Tar River in 1758 Thomas Spell sold his holdings to Hohn Spell. Records have not been found to verify if John of Charlestown, So Carolina is a descendent of the Spell family of early Edgecombe County. NC. There is no Published Material on those early Spells.
John Spell and his wife Cecelia McLemore (wife's line)of the Carolinas and East Florida Petitioned thethe British government i Pensacola, Fla. for land in West Fla. he was well attached to His majesty's government and disapproved of the present rebellion. His Family consisted of himself, his wife and 3 children. Colonial Records 5 pg 93 of the British records 11/11/1775.
Mager Spell petitioned the Goverment at the same time, requesting land on Bayou Castin and Ponchartrain Lake, then known as Ponchartrain Post now Mandeville, La.
Thomas Spell also requested land the same day. He wished to purchase slaves and settle on Saint Catherine Creek. he petitioned for 150 acres to be surveyed to him. 4/22/1773
mager, Thomas and Sterling Spell were witnesses to the Will of Robert Davis in 1773.
For these men to ask for certain lands show they were here earlier and knew something about the territory.
John and Mager Spell hat to report to the government to renew the warrant for their land on 12/4/1775. John Spell, heir at law to the deceased Joseph Sell, also renewed the warrant for his land.
The Colonial records of British West Florida is on Microfilm in most Large libraries.
At present time it is not known if the early Spell men who came to British West Florida were Brothers. There seems to be a very strong possibility but as yet unverifyed.
With other info that I have, I am trying to tie together almost 10,000, NO JOKE, names of my wife's fathers side of the family.
I started this project because of an injury I had at work to keep myself busy. It sure has snowballed beyond my expectations.
