Bryan SPIKE was the first settler in the area of Portland Twp known as Spike's Corners, later to be named Harrowsmith. He had emigrated to the US from Yorkshire, England. While in the US, he married Mary McGINNIS and several of his children were born in New York/New Jersey. He relocated to Portland Twp in 1811.

From: "Illustrated Historical Atlas Frontenac, Lennox, and Addington Counties, Ont." J. H. Meacham & Co. 1878 . Bryan Spike, farther of Aaron, was born in Yorkshire, England, in July, 1776, and emigrated to the United States in 1795. After having remained there for several years he concluded to pay a visit to Upper Canada, which he did in 1809, and two years afterwards he permanently settled in the township of Portland, Ontario.

Bryant Spike is listed in the 1800 NY census with male& female under 10 and male & female 16-26. (Pat Greenwell)
