Sponheim/Sponheimer name

My Sponheimer connection is thru my KOERPER line back into Germany... specifically the Kreuznach area. There was a small principality called SPONHEIM centered in a town called Sponheim. My Catherina Sponheimer, connected with the village of Waldbochelheim married John Jacob Corper in 1666. She was the daughter of Hans Wilhelm and Martha (?) Sponheimer. I suspect the name came from descendants of people from Sponheim, the village.
There is a great OLD atlas on line... William Shepherd
"Historical Atlas" N.Y. Henry Holt Co. I have the 1926 5th addition. Sponheim City, monastery and castle are all indexed for those interested!
I suspect the Sponheim/ers moved and married into the surrounding towns... Boos, Weiler, Rehborn, Langenthal, etc One reason for posting this was to suggest a starting place for those trying to cross the Atlantic!
Just thought I would pass this on! phil
