WOW! You've really added another fascinating piece to the puzzle we already had. I wonder where John FREY came in? If you have the birth date of your wife's William, it might tell us that. We found the records of the other three marriages, each under the name of the prior marriage. You don't suppose Emma and John weren't actually married, do you? These are the marriages we found:
Emma SMITH to Harvey J. HARTWELL, 19 Feb 1891 in Monroe Co. in the home of her parents, Alma SMITH and Christiana FOREMAN.
Emma HARTWELL to C. L. TREMAIN (occupation Minister), 30 Sep 1903 in Ottumwa.
Emma TREMAIN to William Strickland SPONSLER (occupation Carpenter), 1 Jun 1906 in Ottumwa.
It's interesting about Sponsler having a jewelry store. In the 1900 census, during the time Alma and Christiana had separated and before they remarried on 12 Jun 1900, Alma's occupation is listed as "jewelry peddler."
I'd definitely like to exchange information with you. I'll e-mail you directly and send you my mailing address and will appreciate having yours, also. Della
