Hi John,
Nice to hear from you. I do have quite a bit on John's line starting with John Spratley who died in 1728 and coming all the way down to myself. My mother was a Spratley.
I've been able to find very little on William Spratley, son of John II and Mary Cocke. My line goes from John II to John III and Mary Hamlin, their son, Benjamin Spratley and Susannah Sebrell, Walter Spratley and Elizabeth Shackelford, Albert Gallatin Spratley and Lavinia Wheadon and their son Henry Spratley who ended up out here north of Seattle.
I have wills for John I, John III, Benjamin and Walter.
I haven't been able to trace John I back past a will he and his wife Elizabeth E. signed as witnesses in 1703 in Hanover Co.
I also have a transcription of Henry Hartwell's will that leaves a legacy to John Spratley. Henry died in Stepney, England in 1699 and left Virginia in 1695. I suspect that John I's wife Elizabeth was either a Hartwell or related to Henry's wife because of the wording in the will.
When John I Spratley died in 1728 his wife was Phillis so he remarried and I don't know which wife belongs with which children.
It's confusing not being able to trace John I back further than 1703 yet having the will of Henry Hartwell from 1699. He must have known John while he was either in James City Co. or York Co. where Henry was born...
I'd love some help with this clan. Are you related through Elizabeth and Benjamin Simmons?
You can email me direct at: perrault@blarg.net
