Dear David, Spriggs and Sprague are often interchangeable at this time for some reason. You should check out Sprague on the IGI for both Devon and Cornwall. I am in the UK on sabbatical and so don't have most of my records here, but I recall an earlier Samuel Bennett Sprague in Cornwall in the mid 1700s I think it was. If this isn't in the IGI it is in Cornish wills. I will not be able to find out for sure until I return in about late October this year. There are a lot of Spriggs of my line in Brixham at about the time you are interested in but they don't include a Samuel. Interestingly their name changes from Spriggs in the 1760s to Spragg, Sprague, Spragge and Spraggs in the generation you are interested in and then in the next generation to Sprang and Sprague - all in Brixham! That line goes back to Richard Spriggs, bp 28 July 1761, Stoke Damerell, Devon who married Anne Petherbridge 14 January 1784 in Brixham. At the marriage he is recorded as Richard Spragg. All these families may be interrelated so please stay in touch.
