I will hit the history books to see what was going on in the US during 1850 as the answer is probably there! I know my ancestor, Betsy Ann Springs and her husband William Doughty did arrive about 1859/1853 in Williamson County, and family legend has always been that they travelled with several families from TN. to Illinois by covered wagon. William Doughty was from a land owning family in Tenn., and he is the one of 2 siblings that left Tenn at that time. William and Betsy did return to TN upon the death of his Father to settle the estate. Williams family had land property and they also were slave owners. In the estate settlement, all of the children inherited/purchased the slaves from their parents estate except for William and Betsy. I do not find anywhere where William fought in the civil war. I know they had connections with their families in the South when the Father died, but after that I have no other records of family connections.
I am going to Southern Illinois this week and will do some snooping around while I am there.
