I am descended from Mahala Springfield, whose parents remain a mystery. Some have attached her to Laodicea and Thomas Springfield of Upcountry SC. Yes, she was born in the same town in which they were residing at the time, but no proof exists that she was indeed their child. (And a clue that she was NOT.)

There is also a mystery of the origins of Thomas B. Springfield's father and mother. According to some compiled records, Thomas' father, Thomas, a school teacher --hanged himself and left his children without a guardian. Supposedly, his wife was named Martha and they lived in Bute Co. North Carolina.

Recently, I discovered a (grrrr) unsourced tree on, which seems to tie the Thomas SPRING family to Thomas SPRINGFIELD.

This line supposedly ties back to the TRAIN family in Weston, Massachusetts--another family in another branch on my tree.

If anyone has any information on this supposed change of name, please let me know.

Thanks, Maureen
