Bob
Most of my family came from the Kircudbright area, Castle Douglas was the supposed area, in fact according to another Sproat from Scotland, Edinburgh, we can wear the Douglas colors, which would make me think that we either lived under their protection in the middle ages, or else the Sproats were related to the Douglas family in some way.
All the information I have leads to that area as the initial starting point for my family lineage - and my Robert Sproat, son of James H left before 1640's because he was in Scituate and married in 1660, first child born in 1661, (Mercy Sproat).
I would be happy to help you if you wish, we have been here since that time, left the Kircudbright area per the family stories. Sir James was supposed to have been Knighted in 1581 by Q.E.
