Marianne, I have John Curl Spruell as the husband of Nancy Jane Vinson, a child of my gggrandfather Richard Vinson. This information comes from Al Vinson who does research on the Vinson's of Louisiana. His information looks valid:
The 1870 Richland Parish, LA census has a Malissa (Melissa) Vinson living with John C. Sprewell (Spruell) (family #32) and his wife Nancy (age 24) and their children. Melissa is listed as age 22, born in AL, an "Aset in house." They are living near the family (#45) of Artissima Vinson Clevinger.
Records collected by Al Vinson show Nancy Jane Vinson md. John C. Spruell - Dec 19, 1863- Ouachita Parish, LA. If this is the same person, she would have been 18.
