Who was Gabriel Spruiell ?

In a document from St. Clair Co, AL during the War Between the States, Gov. Shorter declared my 2GGF- Edmund S. Martin exempt because of his profession as a 'shoe & boot-
maker' on the strength of a petition from his local com-
munity that he be allowed to perform this needed service instead of being called up as a regular soldier. Among the names of those who signed this petition was that of GABRIEL SPRUIELL.

Edmund S. Martin's wife was Mahala E.F. Grimes, the GD of Alexander Culbertson & his first wife - MAHALA SPREWELL. This whole family group travelled from SC thru GA, and then eventually on into eastern AL not too many years before The War.

Mahala's parents are unk. to me, and even though the names SPRUIELL & SPREWELL are spelled differently, I think there might be a family connection between the GABRIEL SPRUIELL who signed this petition and my MAHALA SPREWELL.

This search has really become my 'brick wall', so if anyone here has some more info. you would be willing to share about GABRIEL SPRUIELL, or his family, that would be a really big help.

Thanks ahead of time,
Martha
