Mike, thanks for the response. It does seem that you have the right Jesse. From my date "guestimates", Calvin (who was actually my ggg-grandfather) must have been born about 1798. That would mean he went to live with Jesse when Jesse was about 29. I have always wondered why he went to live with the Spurgeons, and have thought that they might have been related in some way. My great-grandmother's diary speaks of the father (Eli) dying, but there is no mention of what happened to Calvin's mother. Maybe she was a was a relative of Jesse's. How exciting!! I have a tremendous amount of information on my ggg-grandmother's (Sarah Ann Smalley) side of the family, but nothing past Calvin.
