Jane Welborn or Mary Jane Sellers or both

Forgive me if this has already been answered, but I am helping my wife with her family history and have not dealt this this forum before. However, with my wife and here family, there seems to be some confusion as to who was the wife of William Spurgin (pre-revolutionary squire in Rowan County, NC). Some sources seem to favor Mary Jane Sellers (b. 1736 in Ireland) and others a Jane Welborn from Maryland and others seem to indicate that she had both the Welborn and Sellers names. Which is it and how do you know? (This is not saying you don't know; I just like to know my sources.)

I recently visited the Abbott's Creek cemetary where William's wife is buried and found her headstone in line with several Welborns. I could not find any Sellers.
