I have a book called "Long Beach in the World War" there is a write up about the enlistment of Robert G. Spurgeon, the son of William Henry & Margaret Jane Spurgeon. The article reads:

"Robert G. Spurgeon, born Santa Ana, CA, November 3, 1888. Parents, William Henry and Margaret Jane Spurgeon. Enlisted December 14, 1917 Naval Aviation, Balboa Park, San Diego. Overseas April 23, 1918, stationed at Paulliac, France. Left July for service in Italy, stationed at U.S.N. Air Station Porto Corsini, near Venice, detail of service being patrol of East Coast of Italy occasional raids on Polo, the Austrian base across the Adriatic. Discharges from service, March 27, 1919."
There is also a picture.
