Spurgeon Newman of SC
Posted by: Preston Newman (ID *****4052) Date: February 22, 2004 at 15:04:31

My ancient ancestor Diocletian (D.C./Doc) Newman (b 4July1819 SC) of early Spartanburg SC records, had a son named Spurgeon Newman, bc 1844 in SC. Spurgeon Newman was included in his father's household in Carroll Co GA in the 1860 census enumeration.

Spurgeon's father D.C./Doc Newman was married a second time in Cherokee Co GA in 1848 to Sarah Wallis, and their son William Jasper Newman (b 16 Feb 1849 in GA) was my great grandfather). My premise is that D.C./Doc Newman's first wife was a Spurgeon, and she died between 1844 and 1848.

I seek any Spurgeon family information from the 1840 decade in Spartanburg Co SC (or surrounding county locales) that would shed light on the possibility my D.C./Doc Newman ancestor married first into the Spurgeon family of early SC record. Any help would be appreciated...I owe it to Spurgeon Newman, who died young in a Georgia unit in the Civil War, to do this.

Please be in touch via e-mail, for my immediate response.
