I too have been looking for the 1900 census for my ggrandparents. After looking at the actual page the census taker wrote, I am convinced that my ggrandfather, John Spurlock was in another location working on the railroad while Elisa and their children were at home on Platte Ave in Richland (Schuyler) Nebraska.
The names are a bit messed up but the birthdates and spacing is correct. Elisa was a very quiet and shy woman. The names given the census taker may have been misinterpreted easily. (I have worked the census 3 times myself and can see where this can happen.)
Elisa was home with Walter Hershell, the eldest child (b Jan 10 1880); Clement Franklin (b Jan 3, 1884), Nellie Alice (b Feb 9 1889), Ethel Leora (b Mar 18 1896), and GUY Marion (b 23 Dec 1899), as well as my grandmother, IDA May (b Apr 23 1892). The "Baby", George B born Jan 8 1895 probably had died Sept 14 1899.
I am looking for his gravesite at this time and may have found it unmarked in Richland Cemetery.
John Willima was the son of Rev. Lindsey and Rhoda (Booton) Spurlock. They were cousins divorced in Iowa and both are buried there separately. The Booton and Spurlock families cross lines frequently.
I have listings on each of the Spurlock children as Ken Haas may as well since he has been working on Spurlock lines for many years. But I knew many of these people as did my mother, who is still living but no longer able to work on our family genealogy. Many of my living cousins want to keep private so I do not list nor post much of my work.
You will notice if you look at the copy of the original document that there are many corrections to the census page including the sex of one of the brothers. Adrain was listed as female. Ida and Ethel were especially messed up.
This family went from Iowa to Nebraska then on to Colorado. They were living in the Niwat area (near Longmont) before moving on to the homestead in Masonville CO. The house there is still standing as is the neighboring home of John's brother who moved there as well.
I was visiting and photographing the area last month with my daughter grand daughter.
If you would care to have more information or share, please contact me by email at [email protected].
Our Spurlocks were and are still characters and full of the old "Irish".
