Dear Winnie,
I know very little about Robert Squibb of SC. In the book "South Carolina Naturalizations 1783-1850" by Brent H. Holcomb, are found the following notations. 1) page 50, "It appears in the Journals of the privy council that Robert Squibb was admitted a citizen of this state on the 26th day of March 1783. 2) page 73, "G. A. Petition 1783, #243, Robt Squibb, seedsman, gardner & Professor of Agriculture...left England in 1780 to settled in Carolina...15 Feb 1783." and 3) page 79 has a list of those granted citizenship and Robt Squib is listed among those.
In the 1790 census of SC, Robert Squibb is listed as single and his household had some slaves. Also I know that I have read somewhere that Robert Squibb authored some early horticultural books.
Although I can not remember the source of the information, I believe he traveled back to England a couple of times and that at some point he may have left SC for Ohio.I am afraid that I did not keep good records on him as he did not fit into the other Squibb families in PA.
Would love to hear from you and I can always be reached at [email protected]
