Well, John, that makes two of us hunting George. He was (apparently) my great great grandfather, b. 1821 in Ohio. He married Phebe Ann Baldwin in 1845. George's eye must have wandered or something, because by 1850, he was nowhere to be found, but Phebe was staying with Melinda Sroufe Ellis and her husband James, with two small children, Amos and Charles. I still haven't found George in 1850.
By 1860, George Sroufe was in McDonough county Illinois, 1870 they were in Taylor county Iowa, in 1880, Texas county Missouri. George Sroufe "married" Mary Elizabeth Wear ca. 1854/55, when she was about 14 or 15, and my line comes through her. Mary E Wear was born 1839 in Warren county OH, the daughter of Simpson P. Wear and Sarah Harvey.
George Sroufe had two older sons, perhaps three, by Phebe, that went with him. John W. Sroufe, b. about 1848, who lived in Iowa as late as 1900, and Howard F. Sroufe, who lived in Iowa and Nebraska, and perhaps a Louis H. Sroufe, who lived in Omaha. John Sroufe married in Taylor county Iowa to a Lizzie Ray in 1895 and gave his mother's name as PHEBE GRAHAM.
Where did YOU come up w/ Phebe Graham, and how are you related to George?
Thanks, maybe we can help each other.
