Eileen,
As you say, Stahl seems common for the area, but I have been searching the Stall/Stahls in Franklin/Cumberland area. My earliest ancestor to that time and place is James Stall b. 1761 in Franklin co. He married Anna Maria Simon. In looking thru the 1790 census I see James, Joseph, Pheby, John(in Cumberland), Andrew and Jacob in Franklin co. The James is probably my James, and think Andrew and Joseph are related and that Pheby my be a sister-in-law, or possibly a mother to them. But she is listed as head so may be younger than a mother. Like you, I too have had a tough time with the Stalls.
I have a note that says Henry Stall had a son Jacob. I dont think Henry is my ancestor, but have not found any others contemporary to him. The name Andrew seems to be the popular family name that has come down in this family so have wondered if James' father may be Andrew. Some of the names associated with my Stall's are Simon andDiehl. These families came in 1730s and so think the Stalls did also. For sure they were here before 1761 when James was born.
If you have any info on this family or think we are searching the same would love to hear from you.
