Carol -- You're absolutely right!Elizabeth ELLIOTT is Richard ELLIOTT's mother, not his wife. She is listed on the Madison County Census for 1850 in Household #633.It reads:
Elizabeth ELLIOTT53VA
Elizabeth W. ELLIOTT19AL
Abraham J. ELLIOTT17AL
William C. ELLIOTT24AL
Elizabeth W. ELLIOTT19AL
Abraham J. ELLIOTT17AL
William C. ELLIOTT24AL
Richard and Mary Elizabeth STAINBACK ELLIOTT are listed in Household #626:
Richard and Mary Elizabeth STAINBACK ELLIOTT are listed in Household #626:Richard J. ELLIOTT27AL
Mary E. ELLIOTT19AL
Willetta E. ELLIOTT2AL
Eliza Ann BISHOP41VA
John R. STAINBACK11AL
Mary E. ELLIOTT19AL
Willetta E. ELLIOTT2AL
Eliza Ann BISHOP41VA
John R. STAINBACK11AL
The Census states that Mary Elizabeth STAINBACK ELLIOTT was born in Alabama.John STAINBACK is listed on the 1830 and 1840 Censuses for Madison County, Alabama. My notes for the 1840 Census listsone male under 5 years old, one 40-50 year old male, one 60-70 year old male, two females under 5 years old,and one 30-40 year old female.(Surely would have been helpful if they had listed names for these other members of the household!)Maybe there was another John STAINBACK living in Huntsville at this time! I will double check this listing and check for the listings for the 1830 Census when I return to the Huntsville Public Library.
