PENN STALKER? Scot-Quaker, did he exist?

There is an old tradition in our SHIELDS family that the first ancestor, Delight SHIELD of Accomack Co VA was married to Jerusha STALKER on 1 Jan 1719 (exact date even!). She was supposed to have been b. in Kent Co MD, the daughter of Penn STALKER and his wife Alice.

This couple (Penn and Alice) were supposed to have been members of the Bradford MM, Chester Co PA. He is alleged to have been impressed as a sailor while he was in Belfast, Ireland, and in 1699 deserted ship while in the James River and found refuge in York Co VA. Later he was of Accomac and then in Kent Co MD. Nice, though rather jumbled story..... And how does Jerusha get born in Md, yet marry the VA man???

To date, I have not been able to even prove the existance of these STALKERS and feel that Delight SHIELD of Accomack Co VA was m. to Elizabeth CUSTIS instead. The fact that there was a date for the marriage of Delight to Jerusha still bothers me and makes me wonder who dreamed up this family, or did they? Does anyone have any proof of the above family? Elisha Kent STALKER was supposed to have been a brother of Jerusha, and there were four others not named. Surely if they existed there must be descendants out there?

Has anyone run across this branch of STALKERS? I'd appreciate any help at all.

Barb Petty
