According to Dr. Donald Arthur Stumbo of Knoxville, Tennessee, the Stumbaughs/Stambaughs/Stambachs are of Swiss-German origin. Many hundreds of years ago, they migrated from Switzerland to the Alsace-Lorraine region. This area is now in France but at various times, it was under German control. I am a Stumbaugh descendant also, and possibly we are descended from a Hans Jacob Stumbaugh/Stambach/Stambagh who came to America as an endentured servant and landed in Philadelphia. I do know that my GGGG-Grandfather was named Frederick and he married a Margaret and they lived in Rockingham County, Virginia. They had several children including my GGG-Grandfather, David Dart. Margaret died and Frederick married a Mary Rolas. Apparently she also died as Frederick died in Lawrence County, Ohio where he had lived with a son. David Dart married a Rhoda Gilliland in Greenup County, Kentucky and lived there a while before moving to Lawrence County, Ohio. They had a number of children including my GG-Grandfather, Andrew Jackson Stumbaugh. Later, David, Rhoda and family moved to Cass County, Indiana near Logansport. David died there at 62+ years of age with Typhoid Fever. Rhoda lived to be 89 years old. My GG-Grandfather married Anna Fitzer. My GG-Grandfather and one of his sons both fought in the Civil War. About 1869, A.J. and family left Indiana and came to Johnson County, Arkansas. A.J. was a Methodist minister and became the pastor of a church here in Johnson County.
