As I understand it, our original immigrants were named STAMBACH and came from the Alsace region of France/Germany. In that region, German names were pronounced with a soft French "accent". Thus the name was spoken as STAHMBAH or STAHMBAUGH. Those closer to Germany proper were spoken STAMBACK, STOMBOCK, and perhaps STEINBECK.
