Paul, I think you wrote that your "Stamms" has a connection back to Alsfeld and Marburg in Hesse.
I am an immigrant (1952) from Germany to Canada, and come directly from that line. I have a book written in 1913 by my great grand uncle Moritz about the family. Its in old Gothic Script (German) on the Stamms, mostly about the family from Marburg and Alsfeld, but also dealing with the branches in various other places, including Minnesota and Galicia. In the Marburg/Alsfeld area the family traces back to the 1300's when a Beit Stamm is known to have been on the Alsfeld Council ("Rat" in German.)
The next confirmed entry is a Philipp Stamm born in 1460, presumed to be the father of Gottshalk Stamm, born in 1490. His line through his second son is my line for 13 generations.
There are still Stamms in the area, but our direct line from the late 1800's only had females who stayed in the area, and theymarried into other families. The oldest known property of the Stamm's,a mill from 1514, is still there, in Schweinsberg, between Alsfeld and Marburg.
Our family here is very close with our ratherdistant cousins over there. We host each other's kids and visit back and forth frequently.
The documentation is superb, and there is much more of it. I am working on an update following with my Grandfather, Dr. Hugo Stamm, of Kassel and Hannover, my father, and his five brothers, my brother, our children.
A cousin of my fathers has more extensive records. Now 73, he lives in a small Town not far from Marburg, is a Fullbright scholar and looks after the local museum. He inherited copies of more extensive documentation which has yet to be put into the package.
With Alsfeld having achieved status as one of five European historical cities of the middle ages, its history was researched. That fills in some of the Stamm history from the 1208 to 1460 period. Some Stamms on my list -- although not my direct line -- are shown in portraits in the Alsfeld cathedral.
If you will let me know which Alsfeld and Marburg Stamms you are connected to I will try to connect that to my record set and let you know how it fits in.
Garry Stamm,(born Gert Martin Hugo Stamm), Toronto.
