Partial Brick Wall Breakthrough - Dewey / George Stamper
Thanks to an awesome long-lost cousin (thanks Kelly) who responded to an old brick wall posting of mine on another website, I have a partial breakthrough on my great-grandfather Dewey Stamper and am now looking for any additional info to flesh out this branch of my tree.
Short version - After years searching and just about completing my tree except for my main family name branch, Stamper, I had just about given up.All I knew was Dewey and Bill Stamper (b. approx 1903-05, Sandy Hook, Elliot, KY) married sisters Maye and Nora Duvall.(There was another Dewey Stamper born in the same year, same area of KY.) The rumor had it in my immediate family that perhaps we weren't Stampers at all, and there were vague rumblings about Dewey's mother's, um, "morality" lol.
Here is the information Kelly provided me with:
George Stamper and Elizabeth Whitt/Witt were never married but had Dewey and Bill Stamper. It's possible they were common law. They split up, and George went on to have other children.Three known names are William, Greenie, and James Stamper.Elizabeth Whitt eventually married an Adkins and had a son Clyde.
Rumor has it that Elizabeth's new husband/boyfriend didn't want the Stamper boys around (Dewey and Bill) and sent them off to work as farm hands at the Farley family farm, where they lived and worked from that point forward.
Kelly's grandparents were Bill and Nora Stamper (Dewey's brother). She remembers her grandma Nora showing her an old letter when she was younger regarding the Stamper family name. All she can recall is that it looked very old, and that it mentioned that when this branch of Stampers originally immigrated their name was changed from "Stampfer" to "Stamper".
I'm itching to get researching on this new info, and wondered if this George Stamper or this story sounded familiar to anyone here.
Thanks All!!
