John b. 1750/Jacob b. 1763 How related?

John Stampley b. 1750 m. Martha Phoebe Curtis abt. 1775. Jacob Stampley b. 1763 m. Mary Cole b. 1770 in Natchez District in 1788. I have a source which states that John and Jacob were brothers. The author, Rev. John Griffing Jones b. 1804, used as his source, John Illand Stampley b. April 18, 1789, the oldest son of Jacob Stampley and Mary Cole. He interviewed John Stampley in the 1840's and wrote his book in the 1860's. This claim appears to be very controversial amongst knowledgeable Stamply researchers. Granted, the author could have misunderstood John or simply gotten it wrong, however this rasies a very provocative challenge to the accepted Stampley family history. If John and Jacob are brothers it raises some problems with the early Stampley family relationships. Who was the father of John and Jacob? Many consider Jacob Stampley b. 1700 the father of John Stampley b. 1750. Rev. Jones' claim creates some problems with this parentage. If the John and Jacob were brothers then Jacob b. 1700 would have been 63 years old when his son Jacob was born. I would love to hear other's responses/theories. I can send photocopies of the pertinet pages of this book to any interested.
