The Ottawa [Kansas] Herald, Wednesday, April 16, 1952, p. 5, col. 5
Mrs. Mary B. Gardner, 65, of 732 S. Oak, died of a heart condition in Ransom Memorial Hospital today at 5:30 a.m. She had been in failing health two years. She was born Oct. 30, 1886, in San Jose, Calif. She had lived in Franklin county and Ottawa since her marriage to Lewis P. Gardner in 1910, coming from Miami county.
Her membership was in the United Brethren church of Stanton. She was a member of the Army Mothers club.
Survivors are the widower, two children, Mrs. Elbert Hoyt and John L. Gardner, Ottawa; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. W. H. Savidge, Paola; Mrs. Fred Miller, Rantoul; and Mrs. Statie Ragland, Grand Junction, Colo.
Funeral services will be held at the MvCay [sic] Dengel Mortuary Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. A. Blair Helman will officiate. Interment will be in Highland cemetery.

NOTE: Lewis Porter Garder was born 6 Aug 1883 near Rantoul, Franklin, Kansas; he died 19 Mar 1964 at Ottawa, Franklin, Kansas and was buried beside Mary Bessie at Highland Cemetery, in Ottawa. Their other son, William Gardner, is buried near them. He was born in 1920; he died April 1945 in an English hospital, of wounds suffered during a battle in Germany (he was in the U. S. Army). Lewis Porter was the son of Lewis Roland and Mary Violette (Scoville) Gardner; grandson of Lewis T. and Hanna O. (maiden name unknown) Gardner.
Please note that Mary Bessie's sisters, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Ragland, were stepsisters, daughters of her stepmother, Myrtle (Whitehead) Buchanan Stanbro.
"MvCay" should be "McVey." Louis Dengel was in partnership with a Mr. McVey for a number of years. The business later dropped the McVey name and is now known as the Dengel Mortuary. Louis's son, Walter Dengel, operated the mortuary and is now semi-retired. Walt's son, Craig Dengel, currently runs the business. It is located on South Hickory Street in Ottawa, Kansas.
John Lewis ("Jack") Gardner, born 28 Aug 1911 near Rantoul; died 31 May 1987, Leavenworth, Kansas, and buried there; was my stepfather. My mother, Almeda Viola ("Vi") Smith, was his second wife.
Jack first married Virginia Lu Gibson in 1944. They divorced in 1953. Their son, James Lewis Gardner, was born 26 Apr 1945; died 14 May 1992. Jim was married, but by choice had no children.
