I am currently searching for any information on my 3-3-3-grandmother, Phebe Stancliff/t. She was born June 15, 1824 in NY. She first appears by name in the 1850 census, Collins, Erie Co., PA, in the household of Abiel Wood (rel. unk.), which also includes a Mary Stanclift, 57 or 59, born in NY (rel. unk). Interestingly, the birthplace of her daughter, Clarinda, born in 1849, is Lodi, Seneca Co., NY.
In the 1880 census, Phebe stated that both her parents were born in Canada. For that reason, I suspect that she is the granddaughter of John Stanclift, who listed his residences in his Rev. War veteran benefit applications as Middleton, CT (at birth), Torrington, CT, Oneida Co., NY, Canada, and Collins, Erie Co., NY, to which he moved in 1814. He may have actually moved then to Erie Co., PA, then to Erie Co. NY in 1840 - the abstract is a bit confusing about it.
I'd greatly appreciate any information on John Stanclift's family, especially his offspring and their children. I'm hoping to find a connection to my ancestor's ancestors (who isn't?). Her life is a bit of a curious mystery. She married an Oren TOOLEY, who left her around 1860 to search for gold, presumably in CO, which was having a gold rush at the time, and never returned. She later moved to Berrien Co., MI and eventually remarried a William SIMPSON.
Also, the Stancliff spelling is only used in notes my family made regarding Phebe's maiden name.
Please post here or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org with any info. I'll be happy to share what I know of Phebe's descendants. Thanks!
