James Stancliff of Indiana
Posted by: Larry Oswalt (ID *****8538) Date: March 03, 2004 at 10:36:57
  of 68

In my family, I have this James as #4, b 1806 in Canada, d 24 Dec 1862 in Gallatin, TN during the Civil War. I am descended from his daughter Mary. There were 3 or (maybe) 4 other daughters with Hanna ----, who died in 1853. He might be the James Stancliff listed in the Marion Co, IL census in 1860, but his age is given as 62. The Household includes his sister Hannah. There is a boy, Josiah, age 7 listed with him. Could this be a son who was born when Hannah died? There is a marriage for James Stancliff and Elizabeth Collins 3 Sep 1854 in Madison Co, IN. Is this the same James? He disappears from my data between 1854 and when he enlisted in the army in Wabash, IN. Evidently he lied about his age to be young enough to enlist. His dates do not come out right in some records.
