Were you ever able to find the father of your Wm Riley Standefer? Someone posted a response to my response to you. So, I went back in and looked at your original query, then took a quick look at Carol Yarbrough's website. I saw your 1999 posting on her site, too.

My James Monroe Rice b 1826 TN and his b-in-l Henry C. Standefer 1833, left TX for the CA gold fields, then returned to TX. Their wives stayed in Milam Co, TX. Do you suppose your William went with them? Where did he get land in TX? You mentioned he got some TX land in 1852 for surveying.

Although my James Rice was b in TN, his family went to GA for a short stay, then AL, before he left home and went to TX with his sister Elizabeth Rice and her husband Israel Brawley Standefer.

TN>AL>TX was a common migration pattern for the Standefers, too.
