Mrs. Emma Standifer ~ Davis City, Iowa

Decatur County Journal
Thursday, December 2, l9l5

MRS. MARY C. DAVIS was born in McLean County, Kentucky, March 4, l840,
and departed this life at Leon, Iowa, November 26, l9l5. October l9,
l857, she was maried to JOHN DAVIS, of Springfield, Illinois. Eight
children were born to this union, namely, seven daughters and one son.
MRS. DAVIS came with her husband to Davis County, Iowa in l86l. Soon
after their arrival in Iowa, MRS. DAVIS yielded her husband as a soldier
to the Union cause. But after enlisting he was discharged from further
service.

At the close of the war, MRS. DAVIS moved with her husband to the old
DAVIS homestead near Leon, Iowa, where they lived happily together until
in October, l896, when the husband preceded the wife to the mysterious
realm which lies beyond the river of death. In l89l MRS. DAVIS moved to
Leon, Iowa, where she has made her home ever since. In l894 she
transferred her church membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church in
Leon, of which church she remained a faithful and consistent member
until she went to join the church Triumphant. While she had been in
feeble health and a sufferer for some time, there was no dark valley for
her when Jesus came. Her last days were spent in speaking words of
assurance, cheer and comfort to her loved ones and those who gathered at
her bedside.

Of the eight children born to this good woman, six remain to mourn the
loss of their mother. FLORENCE died in childhood, and ABRAHAM L. in
young manhood. The surviving six daughters are MRS. FRANCIS FUNK and
MRS. G.L. LANTZ, both of Shenandoah, Iowa; MRS. EMMA STANDIFER, of Davis
City, Iowa; MRS. EVA GOODMAN, MRS. ELLA MOORE, and MRS. ALICE BOWMAN who
reside in Leon. These six mourning daughters are joined in their sorrow
by MRS. ELI BEASLEY, of Osceola, Ia., a sister of MRS. DAVIS, by
twenty-nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a large
circle of other relatives and friends. Truly it may be said that the
seventy-five years of this woman's life meant much for God and humanity.

She resteth now. No more her breast
Heaves with its weary breath,
Pain sits no longer on the brow
Where lies the calm of death.
Sunk to her rest like a tired child,
She lies in slumber deep,
Soft folded in the arms of Him
Who "giveth His beloved sleep."

The funeral was conducted by her Pastor, the Rev. Raoul R. Moser, at the
Methodist Episcopal Church, last Thursday morning. The burial took
place at the Dunkard Cemetery northeast of Leon.
