BENJAMIN & DESSIE SHEARER FAMILY
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SHEARER
Ben was born at Atwood, Illinois (Piatt County) on March 8, 1887. According to his birth certificate, he was the third child of Thomas Shearer and Martha Standerfer Shearer. Thomas (30) was a farmer and Martha (23) was a housewife.
Ben & Dessie were married in Olney, Illinois November 25, 1911.
Benjamin Shearer passed from this life on September 22, 1962 in Olney, Illinois.
DESSIE BURNIS EVERETTE
Dessie was born at Pinkstaff, Illinois (Lawrence County) on May 28, 1893. She was the daughter of Alton L. Everette (born Alton Everette Jones) and Marjorie Alice Wells.
Dessie Shearer passed away on October 12, 1963, in Olney, Illinois and was then placed beside her Ben at Maple Dale Cemetery on the south side of town.
Their life together was spread across more than half a century. During that time the United States was involved in World War I, the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. I'm sure that many volumes could be filled with the joys and anguish they lived through.
Together they raised nine youngsters who married and survived this life for many years as adults to enjoy the freedoms of this great land of America. Ben spent most of his work career in construction and masonry. Dessie worked in their home, was employed with the Brown Shoe Company, as well as some other employment over the years. They lived primarily in the Olney area throughout their lives. Some time was spent in Kankakee, Illinois. They spent a short time in Oregon before and after 1950.
The marriages of their nine children blessed Ben & Dessie with twenty-two grandchildren to love. As their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we each share a common heritage although we have been scattered throughout the US over the years. I hope we never forget the sacrifices they made in raising their family.
I received the following list from my Aunt Bertie Simons on January 25, 1988. It was a typed sheet that she kept to remind her of the many birthdays and anniversaries in the family. Many names have been changed through marriage over the years. There may be errors on this sheet - please let me know if you find them.
Please remember these names and dates were current in 1988.
