I think that you are a descendant of Eurydice Gardner, her sister Sarah WOFFORD was my ancestor.
I do not have the will I referred to, the notes came from Virginia Crilley also from Eurydice GARDNER.I get so confused dealing with the BRYAN, Martin GARDNERs and John GARDNERs.However, they are my family.I posted a message on the Sussex County, Virginia today.
The will is in the book by William Lindsay HOPKINS, Sussex Co, Va, Will Books A-F, 1754-1806 (reprinted 1994, Iberian).Eurydice also had a sister that married a Jonathan GRIMES.They were in
the 1850 Census of Stewart County but cannot find anything more on them.If I should find the will first I will send it to you. Thanks, Norris Barrow, 104 Jackson St. Dover, Tn.37058

John Gardner who married Elizabeth James was probably born in Bertie Co. NC 1755-?1759 He's the one whose will we have in Stewart Co which names Dicey Grimes.May 4 1813 Stewart Co. Elizabeth swore that Edwin James was her lawful brother, and John Gardner swore that Edwin and Emanuel James were brothers.... so that's how we got that much.I've really not worked on this line much lately, so I don't know IF I told you that Martin's father was a John Gardner or not.I "think" that Martin Gardner was the father of John who married Elizabeth James. But that is about as far as I can go. But let's keep working on it!

JOHN GARDNER appears on the 1790 Census of Bertie County NC1-2-5-3--11There are a lot of Gardners that appear on the list. There is an Everitt Gardner and it looks like another John Gardner.

WILL BOOK D, Page 145 Codicil to the Will of JAMES GARDNER, deceased
Be it know to all men by these presents that I, James Gardner of the state of North Carolina, and county of Bertie, have mad and declared my last will and testament in writing, bearing date September the 12th one thousand seven hundred and ninety.I, the said James Gardner, by this present codicil, do ratify and confirm my said last will and testament, and further give and bequeath unto my son WILLIAM GARDNER,a sufficient sum of money to be raised out of my estate at the discretion of the my Executors, to purchase a tract of land now belonging to the estate of JOHN GARDNER, deceased, and his being in the year of minority, will not admit of his doing it, it is my will and desire that the said sum of money shall and may be appropriated to that use whenever the land mentioned before may be sold by Executors in as ample manna as he might or could do was he come to the years of maturity, and my will and meaning that this my codicil be adjudged a part of my last will and testament, and that ll things therein contained be faithfully and truly performed and as fully and as amply in every respect as if the same had been down in my last will and testament.Witness my hand and seal this 12th day of September 1790.
Test: Joseph HollandWilliam Ruffin James (X) Gardner
Notes (mine):The John Gardner referred to in this will was deceased by 1790.
John Gardner testified in 1813 in a Stewart County TN court that Edwin James and Emanuel James were brothers. He therefore cannot be the John Gardner listed here. James Gardner in the will states that Patience James is his daughter. Patience Gardner married Emanuel James in 1788 in Bertie County NC (from records)
James Gardner in his will states that his brothers are:William, John and Martin Gardner
James does not mention a John as being his son so Patience Gardner is probably not the sister of John Gardner but possibly a first cousin. Elizabeth Gardner testified that Edwin James (brother of Emanuel James) was her brother so therefore it is probable that Patience Gardner was her sister-in-law.
Our John Gardner that married Elizabeth James there fore may be the son of William, John or Martin.

I have not made all the connections and am still piecing the tidbits of information together.I am attaching the will of Ann Standley that you may find interesting. The Pervishow may me a mistake and maybe Pervis. The assumption is based on the the James Gardner will that mentions Allen Pervis as executor.I have not followup on the James connection. My conclusion is that John Gardner was a first cousin to Patience Gardner James and that William, Martin or John Gardner the brothers of James Gardner. What I find interesting are the names. The name Baliss House and Josiah Harrell are names that appear in Sumner County, Tennessee records but I'll have to check to be sure. I'll send you some other wills that mention Gardner that might lead to other places to look, as soon as they are typed.
WILLBOOK B, Pg 38 17 June 1725 Bertie Co., North CarolinaWill of ANN STANDLEY, deceased
In the name of God, Amen.I, Ann Standley of the county of Bertie, and province of North Carolina, calling to mind the mortality of my body, and yet it is appointed for all women once to die, I do make this my last will and testament as followeth.First of all, I give and recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and as to the worldly estate that it hath pleased God to give to me, I give and bequeath in manner and form following.I give and bequeath unto my sister ELIZABETH JERNIGAN,ten pounds proclamation money. But secondly, I leave my three negroes, Pegg, Mingo and Nannie, with all my household goods and chattles, to be equally divided between MARTIN GARDNER and JOHN GARDNER, and JAMES GARDNER, my brothers and sisters ANNE SPARKMAN and JANE PERVISHOW.It is the true intent and meaning of this my last will and testament that if my brothers or sisters or any other claiming under or for them, or any of them shall be anyways discontented at this my last will and testament, so as to bring any suit such person so offending shall forfeit all their part of my estate and be cut off with one shilling sterling, and therefore shall have been void, and theirs shall be divided among my other brothers and sisters by JOSEPH HOLLAND and JOHN GARDNER,who I do constitute, appoint and empower to be my true and lawful Executors of this my last will and testament, and I do hereby utterly disallow and disannull all and every other former will and testament. In witness whereof, I have set my hand fixed my seal this seventeen hundred and twenty-five, and in the fifteenth year of the reign of our Sovereign King George the Third. This family was covered in full in a pamphlet which I copied and put in my co-authored book, with my brotherLeroy, Gardner/Ballar and allied families. The author was Malcom Everett Gardner of Arlington, Va.1970.I feared he was dead since all corresponce wasreturned. I gave him full credit in my book for his fine research and added it as a full chapter, with his by-line.Malcom speculates that due to the similarities of familynames, Lewis Gardner of Richmond/Columbia Co. Ga, a Revolutionary hero, was probably from the Bertie NCfamily. Also William Jennings was supposed to have sprung fromthe Bryans of that County who married Gardners. Bryan Gardner is a hand-me-down family name. See page III-6of my book in your Library. Lewis was one of fourgrandsonsons cut off in Needham Bryan's will with but one Crown. In the Conpendium of American Genealogist this line is traced back to 1700 when the three French ships came to Virginia. The named was Jasper Gardener on the Peter and the Anthony. See vii in the forward of my book. I have speculated that this is also my lineage but have only the conpendium to sustain it. It further breaks down between Bertie, N.C. and Kershaw, S.C. when my Lewis Gardner was born in 1810.O.W. Chris Gardner

Looking for any info on Alexander Gardner, b. before 1766, NC (probably Bertie Co.); d. possibly c1819, AL; m. 4 June 1785, Richmond Co., GA, Elizabeth Pratt. They lived in Jones Co., GA for a while and had son JohnGardner, b. 1792, GA. John is the only child I know of,but Alexander and Elizabeth surely had others. Who were they?Alexander was the son of James Gardner and Mary (--) of Bertie Co., NC. Several Bertie Co. Gardners moved toRichmond Co., GA, then on to Columbia and Jones Cos.,GA. Alexander bought land in AL through the CahabaLand Office on 8 Sept. 1817; a William P. Gardner also purchase land through the Cahaba Land Office on the same date (Alexander and William have consecutiveentries, and their land adjoined each other). Who was William -- a son? Another researcher provided me with a note that Alexander's will was either dated or proved on 4 March 1819, but didn't know what county, or even whether it was in GA or AL.
Alexander's son John settled in Crawford Co., GA, and on27 March 1828, there was a marriage record in CrawfordCo. for Louiza Ann Eliz. Pratt Gardner to Robert Brooks. Was this a daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Pratt) Gardner, or was this Alexander's widow, showing her full name?

You stated that your John Gardner was probably the sonof William, John, or Martin Gardner of Bertie Co. I can atleast eliminate one of them for you: William's children were Lewis, Uselfa, Nehemiah, and Mary -- no John. John and Martin Gardner each had sons named John for whom I have no further info. AND, just to throw a wrench intothings, James Gardner's son Averet's full name was JohnAveret Gardner, and his 2nd wife was a "Betsy" (maiden name unknown). As far as Ann Standley's will goes, the "Pervishow" is definitely a mistake. It should read "Pervis," and refers toher sister Jane Gardner who had married James Purvis. You are correct about the name Balis House being foundin Sumner Co., TN. There were at least 3 different mennamed Balis House, and at least one of them, plus some ofthe Gardners, moved to Sumner Co., TN.It is believed that James Gardner's wife Mary was Mary (Turner) House Gardner, who had previously been married to George House and was the mother of BalisHouse, who would therefore have been James Gardner'sstep-son.
By the way, I'm descended from James Gardner through his son Alexander. I have over 60 pages of notes on theGardners of Bertie Co., NC. If you're interested in copies, please email me directly with your postal address, and I'll be happy to mail them to you.Michelle Taunton

to GARDNER, posted by Michelle Taunton on Wed, 30 Dec 1998Surname: Gardner
Martin Gardner b. 1698 Bertie Co., NC, could POSSIBLY be decendant of Thomas Gardner of
Plymouth, St. Andrew, Devon, England. Thomas & Eliabeth Addames were married 16 May 1673,
maybe had son????I am tracing this line also, and thought originally they came from Ireland, now I am beginning to think strongly it was England.

Martin GARDNERPosted by Michelle Taunton
Since I originally posted the query, I've come across several leads that point to Martin (b. 1698) being the son of another Martin Gardner, who was found in southern VA records throughout the late 1600s. I've been in touch with another Gardner descendant whose ancestor, Catherine Gardner, was born in 1688, was supposedly the daughter of a Martin Gardner, and settled in Bertie Co. Considering that Martin Gardner (b. 1698) named a daughter Catherine, it appears that the Catherine Gardner b. 1688 was his older sister, and that they were the children of the elder Martin Gardner. I still need to do some digging to
find the proof, but so far, all the evidence is pointing in that direction.

Jonathan STANDLEY Jr.Posted by Michelle Taunton
Yes, Edmond Standley was listed as a son in Jonathan Standley Jr.'s will. Jonathan Jr. wrote his
will on 5 March 1773 and listed wife Ann (Gardner, daughter of Martin and Anna Gardner); sons
David and Edmond; daughters Elisabeth Roades, Jemima Kittrell, Ester Spivey, Susannah Baker,
Mary Stallings (wife of Josiah Stallings), and Martha Standley; grandson Joshua Spivey (son of
daughter Jemima Kittrell, who had previously been married to Moses Spivey); and "god daughter
Sarah Thomas Jr."
Jonathan Standley's widow Ann (Gardner) Standley apparently was his second or later wife, and
was not the mother of any of Jonathan's children. She died 2 years after Jonathan, and her will
(written 17 June 1775, proved Aug. 1775) named no children and instead left her entire estate to
be divided among her surviving brothers and sisters
