Howard Stansbury's job was to explore the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. With his team of 14, including Lieutenant John W. Gunnison, he set up a series of stations and thoroughly sucveyed the Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake valley. Some of the Ute Indian artifacts he collected ae still in the Smithsonian Institution collection.
