Dan, Greetings!I've enjoyed reading your Starkweather info and adding some of it to my own notes. While you are descended from the 9th of John Starkweather and Hannah Leonard's children, I descend from the second, Leonard (9/13/1782-2/21/1866).His wife was Esther Brewster whom he m. in 1804 and who died in 1838 after having given him 8 children. He then m. Sarah (Sally) Toland 8/18/1839.My problem which I hope you can solve is this:Family records all state that Leonard was once governor of Michigan; yet I can find no verification of that fact.Is that true? When I was applying to Colonial Dames, the genealogist sent me information from "Pioneers of Eastern Michigan--Calhoun County" stating that Leonard, "many years a resident of Battle Creek," who died 21/2/1866, aged 84, in Keokuk, Iowa."He was convicted of wife murder nine years ago (ca. 1857) and sent to Jackson (prison) for a short time.
The dates certainly match. And Sally Toland died 12/11/1857.Was he both governor and murderer? Can you help me solve this? You said all the siblings were civic leaders. Can you add anything to Leonard's story?
I would also like to be able to fill in the dates, places and spouses of William's other children. What was George's wife Amelia's full name? Can you add any info on the other nine children of John and Hannah?I have birth and some death dates, spouses' names, and little else.
I'll appreciate anything you can give me.
