I found a few more items on the Stateler family of Champaign County Illinois, although nothing on your William specifically:
The Urbana Free Library
Champaign County
Historical and Genealogical Index

ESTATE PAPERS OF MARY STATELER LOVE Comments:
DATE OF DEATH: NOVEMBER 25, 1916.
names;
STATELER, ETHEL
STATELER, FRANK
STATELER, JOHN R.
STATELER, MARY
Note: no William but the other two Stateler children of the 1900 census record are mentioned (I checked the census and what appears as Fran K is really Frank)
A divorce case of Matilda (Kerr) and James STATLER 1869.So that marriage only lasted a couple of years.
I agree with Eva that the best choice for William's father is James but he must have remarried.I cannot find him in 1880.
Some more information on the family in the 1850 census:
In Davis Township, Fountain County, Indiana
Dwelling 688
Mary Stateler 42 Ohio
May E. Stateler 12 "
Amanda Stateler 10 "
James Stateler2 Indiana
Lusan(Susan?) Saxton 30 De
In Noble Twp, Wabash County IN:
Minerva Stateler age with Austin B. Sweet and family
I didn't mention it in my last posting but Minerva was married in Vigo County IN, the other marriages were in Champaign County IL.
Since it unlikely that anyone else is interested in William because he probably had no children I suggest you send for William's death certificate and perhaps the estate papers of Mary Stateler Love.
