Hello Jessica,
Grady Ballard received much of his information from my great uncle, Doss Steed, who first started researching the Steed family before 1950.His research began with DAR records which showed the information which you state.Unfortunately, or FORTUNATELY, both the parentage and marriage of John Steed as recorded by the DAR has been proven in error. The DAR has since closed that line and anyone wishing to join must prove their line back to John Steed.
Since Doss Steed, and other researchers, learned of the errors, I can't help believing that Grady was made aware. They all remained in constant contact through letters, some of which I have copies.
At any rate, here are the facts regarding John Steed:
First, our John Steed was never married to Mary Randolph. That was a misreading of the record of her marriage to John STITH.In the early 19teens a Steed woman joined the DAR and this marriage error was recorded and that is what started that mess. While John Steed may have had a wife prior to Ann Hill, there has been no record found of such marriage.
Next, Edwin Steed, b. 1701, (son of Dutton) was a contemporary of John Steed, b. abt 1710, and thus could not have been his father.Furthermore, Edwin and his wife Elizabeth Hamilton, didn't much care for each other, didn't live together, and didn't have any children.Hasted's History of Kent contains numerous errors which have been proven over time.Goodall's STEDE HILL is more accurate as it pertains to the Kent Steed family.Your records of the Kent Steeds, from Edwin back, are correct as far as we know.No link between our John Steed and that Kent family has been discovered. However, in the copy of the 1739 land grant to John Steed in Brunswick Co. VA, there is a sentence which makes reference to Steed property in East Greenwich, County of Kent. This should be investigated.
Grady Ballard and I share a relative...Rev. L. M. Steed of Henderson Co. TN with Bob Faulkner, another Steed researcher on this forum, and I believe Grady is related to Bob's direct line from the Rev.You might wish to contact him to confirm what I've written. If you have any information, or desire any, on Rev. L. M. Steed's wife's family, let me know. And if I can be of further assistence, you can email me.
Regards,
Gail [Steed] Miller
