As one of those who has been watchin this forum for a number of years, let me add to Sam's observations.

- I think the reason many have stopped posting here is because there is nothing new proven to post. We could all flesh out the descendant lines, but adding 6th & 7th cousins doesn't seem to be as interesting as pushing the ancestral line back. If the STEED line is not moving back from the 1700's, there are many other lines for all of us to pursue.

- As for proven data, I try to be specific about what I KNOW (& I'll tell you what my source is) and what I THINK is the current best estimate, based on what others have told me. I think the latter has value as suggestions on relationships to prove and is better than having no hints. Just remember the difference between what is PROVEN and what is GUESSED at (& the quality of that guess!)

- I, too, get frustrated by all the family coats of arms than people pursue. I'm convinced it is because many Americans do not understand them. They belive the coats of arms belong to a "family" or a "surname". In fact, British coats of arms were issued to ONE PERSON, not to his/her family. I don't know about other other heraldic traditions.

Bob Faulkner (of the John Steed / Ann Hill line [I think])
