Col. William Steele - Woodford Co, KY - Jame Steele
Col. William Steele fought in the Revolutionary War, was a surveyor by profession, and married Sarah Bullock, dau. of Edmund Bullock and Agnes Wingfield.Col. William Steele died in Woodford, KY in 1826.
He had a son, James, I believe. There was a James Steele that lived next to him in the 1810 census, but was not found in the next census of 1820 for Woodford Co, KY.
I also found a record for a Robert Steele, who said his father was James Steele, B 1773, and grandfather Col. William Steele.
Does anyone know the names of Col. William's children?
Does anyone know the wife and children for James Steele?
I believe that this James Steele may be the one that turned up in Ripley Co., Indiana in 1817 and died there in or about 1840. He was from Kentucky. This James Steele was also a surveyor(like Col. William Steele) and was born bet 1771 and 1775.
Three of his known children were:
Pelina P. Steele, b.12/11/1799 VA - d.2/16/1842 Ripley Co, IN, who married (12/24/1818 Ripley Co., IN)Conrad Overturf,
Sally Campbell Steele, b.1/12/1801 VA - d.8/31/1871 Dearborn Co, IN, who married (11/3/1822 Ripley Co, IN) Luman Andrews, and
Polly (possibly Mary?)Steele, b.abt 1805 - d.aft 1840,
married (7/03/1821) George Osborn,
Two other children that might have been James' also were:
Margaret Thompson Steele, (who said her father was James Steele), b.11/02/1802 - d.9/06/1866 Yamhill, OR, married (5/18/1820 Ripley Co, IN) Carmi Goodrich, and
Hiram Steele b.10/15/1804 - d.bef 1860) married (1/06/1831 Ripley Co, IN) Mariah Stephenson.
Other circumstantial evidence that points to the James Steele in Ripley Co, IN being the Son, James, of Col. William Steele of Woodfors Co, KY was that there was a Holman family in Woodford Co, KY that were acquainted with the Steeles there in Woodford.Henry Holman had sons around the same age as James Steele of Ripley Co, IN.One was also a surveyor, and another named a son William Steele Holman so they were closely acquainted. In fact, one son's land bordered William Steele's land. Three of Henry's sons also went to Ripley county Indiana around the same time as James Steele showed up in Ripley Co. IN.I am wondering if they all went at the same time....together.This would prove that both James Steeles were one and the same.Anyone know for certain?
