Gilbert Stees - Illinois and Colorado

A certain Gilbert Stees was mustered out of the Chicago Mercantile Independent Battery Light Artillery on 10 July 1865. He is identified as having inlisted from Will County, IL. The same (or a different) Gilbert Stees is noted in my maternal great grandfather's journal, "April 2, 1866, G.M. Stees arrived & commenced Batching with A.M. Badger, C.T. Badger & L.S. Dawes. April 28th moved to Dawes House." This was in Gilpin County, Colorado Territory. Unfortunately, I have no information on how the bachelors first met. I do suspect that it was Gilbert Stees who met my grandmother in Chicago around 1892 when she and her parents and brother were changing trains for upstate New York. I also belive it is, perhaps, the same Gilbert Stees or Steese who died in 1895 and was buried in Michigan. Does anyone know if these are all and the same person?
