The Valley Falls New Era
Jefferson County (Kansas)
March 3, 1910
Uncle Jacob STEFFEY celebrated his 86th birthday last Monday with a family dinner "at home" for his children. Every year a New Year's dinner is given for all his kith and kin.
Jacob Steffey was born Feb. 27, 1824, in York county, Penn. He was the son of Jacob and Margaret (WARNER) Steffey and is a typical Pennsylvania Dutchman, polished in Kansas.
He attended the common schools of the Keystone state; but was 21 years of age before he could "talk" the English language with much degree of fluency.
At 22 he struck out for himself and in Morrow county made the acquaintance of and married Mrs. Elisabeth (HOSLER) HUFFMAN.
He borrowed a horse and buggy in which he and his girl drove afar to find a preacher to pronounce them man and wife. There were no marriage licenses required in those days.
The date of the primitive wedding was June 7, 1849. His wife was a sister of uncle Abe HOLSER, well known here and now a resident of Western Kansas.
In a few years he moved to Hamilton county, Indiana, his father having located there. To make this long journey, in those days, his father-in-law gave him a horse and buggy.
There his children were born, Silaas, our present county treasurer, John and Mahlon, farmers, and Ella,--Mrs. Wilson GRIFFITHS of Valley Falls. Two of his children died in infancy, of dread diphtheria, when Silas was a baby.
Though farming well in old "Hoosier" he heeded the call to Kansas locating near Ozawkie in 1869. There he prospered and grew in grace, being a faithful member of the United Brethren church. A house of worship now stands his old farm.
His wife dying in 1898, he was left along for some time, his children having all married and gone to themselves. In 1900 he was married to Mrs. Julia CONNELY of Effingham. Two years later they quite farming locating in Valley Falls, where in his comfortable and pleasant home he awaits the call up yonder.
