I've traced my family line back to Jacob Steidley (nee Steitle). His son, Frederick was also born Steitle, but was illiterate. He went south from Pennsylvania to Maryland and got married by an Anglo JP there, who apparently phoneticized his name to "Steidley".
Everything before Jacob is murky, but trace evidence shows him to be a descendent from southern Germany, as far back as the 1500's.
Jacob is my great-great-great-great-great grandfather, and I have 2 following generations with boys.
