My "Steidley's" came through southern Germany. Jacob Steidley (nee Steitle) came to Pennsylvania from Germany in the mid-1700's. His son, Frederick, also born "Steitle", went to Virginia/Maryland (the borders were unsettled then) and got married. Apparently, the Anglo JP phoneticized his name to "Steidley" (per the marriage record - he was illiterate), and that has stuck ever since.
